Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
